Jermane Johnson Jr.jermane johnson

Jermane Jr. was 18 months old when he was drowned by a 5 year old cousin because he cried too much. The children along with 2 others were being watched by 16 a year old babysitter with a mental disorder that was alseep at the time of the drowning. The children were left with the babysitter while the adult left to pick up Jermane’s father from the bus station. His father was coming to get his son.

Some say the aduld that left the children in the hands of a 16 year old that had a mental disorder should be charged with endangering a child because the 16 year old was not fit to watch the children.

St. Louis, MO (KSDK) - Police are investigating a baby's death as a homicide and say it was his five-year-old cousin who drowned him.

It happened at a home in Kansas City, but the little boy, 18-month-old Jermane Johnson Jr., was from St. Louis. Kansas City police tell NewsChannel 5 the five-year-old girl told them she drowned her cousin in the bathtub to make him stop crying. It happened Friday at a home in central Kansas City.

Police say little Jermane lived in St. Louis but had been in the care of relatives for the past couple of weeks.

A 16-year-old girl was babysitting four kids that night, ranging in age from Jermane, who was a year and a half, to a 12-year-old. An adult relative had left the house to pick up the boy's father who was coming to Kansas City from St. Louis on a bus to get his son.

Police say the five-year-old told social workers she intentionally drowned Jermane in a bathtub because he cried too much.

Jessica Luitjohan, a child psychologist with Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital, spoke with NewsChannel 5 to offer some insight as to how someone so young could commit such a violent act.

"Kids are exposed to a lot of violence and they certainly can mimic what they see, whether that's from a video game, or on the news, or in the home, or on the schoolyard, or whatever it is that they see around them," said Luitjohan, who is not part of this case.

Police say the 16-year-old babysitter suffers from a mental disorder. She was sleeping when the drowning happened at around midnight Friday.

Police are investigating this case as a homicide but say they will let prosecutors decide how to proceed.
