Daniel Alexander Shaposhinkov

Daniel was 11 years old when he went on vacation with his loving family. They were hiking at Ten Mile Creek near Yucca Flats in California. Danial’s father helped him down a steep incline then turned to help other family members. When his dad turned around Daniel wasn’t there. The only thing there was slide marks leading down to the water. 50 plus workers searched for Daniel. His body would be found about 400 yards from where he fell. A coroner's report would reveal that Daniel died from blunt force trauma due to his fall.

Fresno County - Sheriff’s Search and Rescue personnel have located the body of the missing 11 year old boy who fell into Ten Mile Creek on Friday. Search crews were back at the search area near Sequoia National Park early Monday morning and to continue searching.

The child, who was visiting from New Jersey with his family, was reported missing on Friday at around 6:00pm.  The child had been hiking with other family members along Ten Mile Creek located on Forest Service land near Hwy 180 & Yucca Flats in Eastern Fresno County.  The location is just outside the Sequoia National Park boundary.

The boy’s father had apparently helped him down a steep incline and then went back up a short distance to help other family members.  When the father turned around, the boy was gone and there were slide marks leading to the water below.

After the initial reporting on Friday, as many as 30 Sheriff’s SAR members, and Eagle One, immediately responded.  Weather conditions made it impossible for Eagle One to fly the area, however a ground search was started.

The following morning, Eagle One again responded to assist the other searchers who then numbered more than 50.  The search continued through Sunday evening when it was suspended due to darkness.

Searchers did locate the child’s shoes about 400 feet downstream of where he is believed to have fallen into the water.

The conditions where the search was taking place are extremely dangerous.  Steep, rocky terrain lead down to the creek which is moving extremely fast due to the snow runoff.  On a scale of 1-6, experts place the creek at a Class 6 which basically makes it impossible for anyone to safely enter.

Monday afternoon rescuers located a body in the river believed to be that of the missing child.  The body is located approximately 400 feet downstream from where the child was believed to have fallen into the creek.

The child, Daniel Alexander Shaposhinkov, had been reported missing by his father after he apparently fell into the creek during a hike near Yucca Flats. The family had been vacationing from their home in East Brunswick, New Jersey.

The Coroner’s Office reports the cause of death to be blunt force trauma due to the fall.
